My name is Catie and I am a current graduate student at Teachers College, Columbia University in the social studies education program. I have a myriad of experience with children: I taught beginner piano in high school and college, and worked as both a third grade teacher and a middle school paraprofessional.

In the summer of 2016, I put an advertisement for piano lessons in my neighborhoods newsletter, aiming to recruit five students. I not only ended up teaching over twenty students that summer, but I maintained a piano studio for the following school year and three successive summers, teaching beginners from the ages of 4 to 14. I coordinated all books, materials, payment, and scheduling while running my studio.

During my sophomore and junior years of college, I continued to teach beginner pianothis time for a larger company called Sounding Sharp, LLC. In this role, I averaged around eight students a school year, prepared most of my students for a recital each semester, and continued to coordinate scheduling and books with families. Through my experiences teaching piano, I gained experience managing relationships with clients, communicating musical ideas to children, and, most importantly, the power of believing in an ideajust as I did when I published the newsletter message.

Additionally, I was part of the Teach for America (TFA) program from May to December 2023, teaching third grade in Chicago. In preparation for this role, I passed the Illinois elementary school content exam and completed a 160+ hour training program. While teaching, I planned and taught reading lessons daily to two third-grade classes, and led 10 leveled reading groupsall of which met at least twice a week.

TFA was ultimately not a good fit for me, so in December 2023 I began working as a special education paraprofessional in a seventh grade general education classroom. As a para, I aided four diverse learners with in-class assignments and behavior regulation in a general classroom setting. With my assistance, three out of four diverse learners earned a GPA of 3.0 or above for third quarter, and two were selected as Students of the Month (an honor bestowed on only one seventh-grader a month).

I believe my breadth of experiences working with children makes me a highly qualified candidate for a babysitting or housesitting position. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questionsI look forward to working with you!
