HopeMark operates on the Bank Street Philosophy, adopted in 1916 by renowned childrens education researcher Lucy Sprague Mitchell. The main emphasis of Bank Street is that children learn through play. Play allows children to understand their world. Children develop social skills through interaction with other children. Manipulative play enables children to problem solve and develop fine motor skills. Through art, children learn creativity and decision making. Dramatic play enhances social, emotional and language skills. Playground activities encourage better hand-eye coordination, and develop gross motor skills. It is our belief that play in a safe and supportive environment fosters a life-long love of learning.
While play is a major component of our curriculum, we also concentrate on cognitive skills needed for kindergarten. Parent / teacher conferences are held each November and March. Teachers observe the children in the areas of social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development. At the conference, teachers and parents develop an action plan to enrich strengths and cultivate areas for improvement.
